As a student at Fayetteville High School, Cheyenne Wright had the opportunity to attend the Southern West Virginia Junior Nursing Academy, where she was able to learn real-life nursing skills and participate in hands-on experiences.
Hosted by the WVU School of Nursing and WVU Tech, the SWVJNA gave Wright a first-hand look at what a career in nursing would really be like.
“I knew I wanted to be a nurse ever since I was 7 years old,” Wright shared. “My grandfather was diagnosed with a rare cancer called multiple myeloma. Watching his nurses care for him with the best care made me want to do the same for someone when they needed it the most.”
During her attendance at the academy, Wright said she especially enjoyed touring local hospitals and watching the real-life nursing scenarios.
“I have always wanted to help people, and attending the academy made my decision even more definite,” she said. “It gave me confidence and motivated me to take the next steps toward my career.”
When it was time to apply to college, her decision was clear: She chose the WVU School of Nursing Beckley Campus, located at WVU Tech, and is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
“I saw so many opportunities that the WVU School of Nursing had to offer,” Wright said. “As a commuter student, attending the Beckley Campus also allows me to stay close to my family while pursuing my education in nursing.”
