What is your favorite memory from your time at WVU Tech?
Probably participating in the biology club. We did a lot of outreach in the community, and it was a lot of fun. We would do trash cleanup and visit a local school for their science fair—it was a great experience.
What did you enjoy most about the biology and psychology programs?
I have really enjoyed the different classes I have taken that I would not have expected to interest me beforehand. Getting to explore topics like parasitology and plant taxonomy opened new areas for me. I also enjoyed how much my psychology and biology classes intertwine. You would think they are separate, but I found a lot of overlap between the two degrees, which has helped me pursue my passion for medical school. For example, I took a rural mental health class in psychology that felt very applicable to where I am from and where I plan to live.
How did Tech prepare you for the future?
All the different courses and the professors were very engaging. Biology was my main focus, and my professors were very supportive in helping me reach my goal of getting into medical school. They often incorporated medical aspects into the courses, even when they did not have to, and I really appreciated that.
Which person at Tech has had the biggest impact on your college experience? How has that person helped you?
I would say Dr. Horton. She is the advisor for the biology club, and I have enjoyed building a relationship with her outside of the classroom. She has been very welcoming and is always excited about what she does, which makes it easier for me to stay passionate as well.
As a soon-to-be graduate, what is your best advice for incoming students?
Be open-minded about every class. Some classes you have to take, but you can still enjoy them and take something from them. Stay open-minded, even about your general courses.
What will you miss most about Tech?
I think I will miss the professors the most. I have built relationships with them and become comfortable, so it is intimidating to think about starting over with new professors. I will really miss that sense of community.
