COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: The courses offered in psychology at WVU Tech are listed below in the following format: 

Psychology (course #): Course Title. Prerequisite(s). Credit hours. Description.

 

Psychology 101 (formerly 221): General Psychology I. None. 3 hours. Introduction to the scientific study of human and animal behavior; origins, growth and development of behavior; language; conditioning and learning; states of awareness, emotion; behavior disorders and treatment; social psychology.

Psychology 202: Research Methods in Psychology. PSYC 221. 3 hours. Research methods in experimental, developmental, clinical, and community-social psychology in the laboratory and the natural environment.

Psychology 241: Life-Span Development. PSYC 221. 3 hours. This course examines developmental changes over the entire human life span. Based on psychological theory and research, it includes practical application. Emphasis is on normal physical, cognitive, and socioemotional growth. Developmental change is charted and described. Underlying psychological processes and biological and environmental influences are analyzed. 

Psychology 301: Biological Foundations of Behavior. PSYC 221, 202. 3 hours. An introduction to animal behavior from the perspective of evolutionary psychology. Survey of fundamental concepts (evolution, genetics, adaptation, and learning) and research methods in understanding animal behavior, including humans and other primates. Includes laboratory exercises and projects.

Psychology 302: Behavior Principles. PSYC 221, 202. 4 hours. Principles of learning and behavior and the significance of these principles for psychological theory and application from the perspective of behavioral psychology and the experimental analysis of behavior. Includes laboratory exercises and projects. 

Psychology 322: Introduction to Social Psychology. PSYC 221. 3 hours. Introduction to social determinants of human behavior. Surveys the relationship of conformity, prejudice, social structure, and other group phenomena to individual behavior.

Psychology 323: Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Psych 221. 3 hours. Psychology as applied science. Application to: personnel selection, training, evaluation; factors influencing job performance, including job design, physical setting, and motivation; organizational characteristics, leadership, change.

Psychology 362. Psychological Assessment. Psych 221. 3 hours. Psychometric theory and development of psychological assessment instruments. Includes behavioral, personality, intellectual, neuropsychological, forensic, achievement, and aptitude assessment.

Psychology 363. Personality Theory. Psych 221. 3 hours. Theoretical and empirical readings in a survey of major perspectives in personality theory, including dynamic, cognitive, humanistic, and behavioral.

Psychology 382: Exceptional Children. PSYC 221. 3 hours. Exceptional mental retardation or advancement; organic disabilities having behavioral consequences, such as cerebral palsy or deafness, and behavior disorders.

Psychology 424. Learning and Behavior Theory. Psych 302. 3 hours. Advanced course in empirical and theoretical issues in the psychology of learning.

Psychology 471: Behavior Modification. PSYC 302. 3 hours. Basic principles of behavior and their application to significant human behavior. Includes clinical, educational, parenting, industrial/organizational, community, and other applications.

Psychology 491. Field Experience. None. 1-3 hours. Supervised field experience in the application of psychological principles. Can be repeated for credit up to and including a maximum of 6 credit hours. Prior faculty approval is required.  

Psychology 493. Special Topics. None. Variable credit. (Consent of instructor). Special topics in psychology across a variety of issues. Specific topics presented in seminar and/or research on psychological phenomena involving library and/or laboratory research. May be repeated for up to 6 credit hours.   

Psychology 495. Independent Study. None. 1-3 hours. Supervised laboratory and/or field research project. Can be repeated for credit up to and including a maximum of 6 credit hours. Prior faculty approval is required.
