New student activities space opens on campus August 22

A new space for students to hang out on campus.

WVU Tech students and student-run organizations will have a new space to hang out and conduct organization business starting Tuesday, August 22.

Located on the ground floor of the Benedum Center, the new location features two meeting rooms (the Gold Room and the Blue Room), an activities room, storage space for student organizations and bulletin boards for community organizations and events. It’s also going to be the home of the Class of 2021 banner signed by new students during this year’s orientation.

To mark the opening of the new space, there will be an open house on Tuesday, August 22 at 12:15 p.m. The space has yet to be named, and students attending the open house event will have a chance to vote on what the university should call it.

Mike Sheldon, Coordinator of Student Programming and Organizations, will also be based in the new space.

“I think it’s important for student organizations to have a dedicated location so that if they have questions, they have someone nearby to help them out. It’s also going to serve as a space where students living on campus can get away for a while and where commuters can spend time between classes to hangout or relax,” he said.

And the space is built for just that. Both meeting rooms are outfitted with televisions. So is the activities area, which also contains a pool table, ping pong tables and lounge spaces. Sheldon said it’s the perfect spot for students to study, hang out, play video games or simply relax.

The space will be open Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. until midnight and Friday from 8 a.m. until 1 a.m. On the weekends, the space opens at 1 p.m. and closes at 1 a.m. on Saturdays and midnight on Sundays.

To reserve one of the space’s meeting rooms, contact Sheldon by email or by phone at 304.929.1310.

A chance to get involved

Students interested in joining a student organization will have an opportunity to meet them all in one place during the Involvement Fair on Tuesday, August 29 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the LRC. Sheldon is encouraging student organizations to sign up for the fair using the form at students.wvutech.edu/student-organizations.
