WVU Tech has temporarily suspended in-person classes the week following spring break (March 23-27) and will then offer online class instruction or other alternative learning options beginning March 30 as it continues to monitor the threat of novel coronavirus. All other online-only classes will continue as originally scheduled. Visit for more.

May 2020 Commencement postponed

commencement announcement

A message to the Class of 2020 and our campus community:

As President Gee shared today, we understand and empathize with your disappointment with the decision to postpone our May graduation ceremonies. But, as always, the safety and well-being of our students and campus community are high priorities. Degrees will still be conferred in May upon the completion of major requirements, and diplomas will be mailed out like normal.
We love and treasure you for all that you bring to our campus. I’ve loved watching you grow and evolve in your studies and prepare for your careers after graduation. You are brilliant and strong, and we know that you’ll continue to carry your wisdom and experiences with you as you enter a new phase of your lives.
We are so proud of each and every one of you. We want to make sure that we send you out into the world with a proper celebration.
We are excited to share that WVU Tech, along with the WVU system, will offer two ways to honor our Class of 2020.
In May, we will release a video that we hope you will share in celebration of your achievement with your classmates, family and friends. Golden Bears across the globe will support and cheer for you on one of the biggest days of your life and will continue to root for you in the days and years ahead. We need your help with this project and we want you to share photos of your experience at WVU Tech for consideration. Find out more and submit your photos on our commencement site.
We realize, however, that a virtual experience can never replace the feeling of having your name called as you walk across that stage and receive your diploma.
We’re working on that. We’re asking for your input to help us determine if we’ll host a special commencement in December 2020 or recognize May 2020 graduates at the May 2021 commencement. In the survey, we’ll also ask you if you’re planning to walk at a future commencement exercise and for your contact information. We haven’t determined when that event will take place and will share more details as they become available. Visit our commencement site to share your thoughts and to sign up to walk at a future in-seat graduation event.
I will be happy to be there to give each and every one of you the biggest hug possible.
This experience will be just one of many that will shape you throughout your life. Though the time we find ourselves in is one of the most challenging our nation has ever faced, we know that our campus, our state and our nation will come together again – stronger and more resilient than ever before.
We know that you will continue to pursue your studies and be just as focused as ever. Lean on your friends and family who have always supported you when you get stressed or overwhelmed. Lean on fellow Golden Bears to help you through this. Have patience with each other. We are all in this together.
We will celebrate your achievements, now and in the future. We will honor you – a graduate of West Virginia University Institute of Technology.
Let’s go, Golden Bears!
