Fatal Vision ProgramCrime Statistics for 2006At West Virginia University Institute of Technology, the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff is always at the top of our agenda. With the support of many campus departments, we have qualified people involved in attempting to keep this campus safe and secure. However, a truly safe campus can only be achieved through the cooperation of all students, faculty, and staff. Campus Police Officers
Campus Police provides patrol protection to the campus property,
parking lots, residence halls, and faculty housing. WVU Tech
officers are vested with full police powers and responsibilities
identical to the local sheriff in your home community. Our officers
are responsible for public safety services including crime reports,
investigations, traffic accidents, fire emergencies, and enforcement
of laws requiring police assistance.
Security in the Residence HallsWest Virginia University Institute of Technology has both single sex and coed residence halls with 24-hour visitation. There are two residence halls that are co-educational (Ratliff and Coed) and one residence hall that is all male (Hirise). Each student room is equipped with dead-bolt locks, peepholes, and window locks. Student resident assistants (RA) live in the residence halls and are on call around the clock. All residence life staff members have training in enforcing residence hall rules and security policies. The Residence Life staff use 2-way radios from 7 p.m. to 7a.m. to keep in contact with the Campus Police officers. Work-study students are assigned to the main desks and game rooms in the evening hours and are available as telephone operators for their halls. Residence halls are locked from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. During these hours, guests must be accompanied by a resident of the hall. Physical Plant DepartmentThe Physical Plant Department maintains the college buildings and grounds with a concern for safety and security. It inspects campus facilities regularly, and, where practical, makes repairs affecting safety and security. The Campus Police Department assists the Physical Plant by reporting hazards. Students, as well at faculty members and staff, may phone the Physical Plant (442-3104) to report any safety and/or security hazard. Student ResponsibilityThe cooperation and involvement of students in a campus safety program is absolutely necessary. Students must take common-sense precautions for their own personal safety and the security of their personal belongings. Although the campus has night lighting, students may phone Campus Police at any time for an escort back to their hall. Valuable items such as stereos, cameras, and televisions should be marked by the Campus Police Operation ID program. Automobiles that are parked on campus must use assigned areas and should be locked at all times. Alcohol and Drug Enforcement PolicyWVU Tech recognizes that the decision to use alcohol responsibly is a matter of individual choice, and the Institution does not seek to impose a moral judgment on members of the campus community. However, the Institution does maintain that individuals and organizations must accept responsibility for the consequences of their actions and strongly discourages the abusive use of alcohol. The Institution further asserts that alcohol abuse has a detrimental effect on the physical, social, and academic well-being of the institutional community. It should be noted that beer is the only intoxicating beverage permitted on campus. Only individuals of legal age may possess or consume beer within the confines of residence hall rooms. Open containers are prohibited in public areas. Substance Abuse Education ProgramsWVU Tech's Campus Police assists members of the campus community in finding alternatives to the use of drugs and alcoholic beverages for promotion social interaction and stress reduction. See the Fatal Vision page. This assistance is consistent with WVU Tech’s educational mission. The Institution, also provides services and resources to individuals who experience substance abuse related difficulties. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
