Submitted Papers Division

Papers on a scientific topic representing the result of student research may be submitted in advance of the Fair for judging.  The papers may represent activities the student also presents in the Investigatory Project Division, Display Division, and/or the Symposium Divisions of the Fair.

Categories

Laboratory Research – a report of an experiment conducted by the student.

Library Research – a report on summarizing research on a topic, including print and electronic sources, such as journals, books, encyclopedias, research reports by other individuals, etc.

 Rules

To increase the value of the learning experience for all participants and to ensure that the competition is fair, all students must follow these guidelines on research writing.

1.             Each paper must be accompanied by an application and include a cover page that includes the title, category, student's name, school, sponsor’s name, and a 25-50 word abstract.

2.             The paper should be neatly typed or printed on unlined paper. Use standard margins (1.0-1.5" left margin, 1.0" right margin) and line spacing (1˝- -2 line). The length of the paper should be sufficient to meet the needs of the topic and should ordinarily not exceed six pages.

3.             Submit a copy of each literature page cited as a reference in the project. On the copied pages, highlight or otherwise clearly indicate all passages you have used, regardless of whether you have summarized the ideas, paraphrased the words, or quoted verbatim. To make sure that the students do not simply compile others' words, not more than 10 percent of the paper should normally be direct quotations from the literature.  Submit the report and the copied pages in a 9x12 mailing envelope.

Any paper showing any level of plagiarism will be automatically disqualified.

Papers must be received, by mail, by February 29, 2008  No late papers will be accepted and electronic submission of paper will not be accepted.
