WVU Tech/CTC@Tech Honor Four Alumni
MONTGOMERY, W.Va. _ Four outstanding alumni of West Virginia University Institute of Technology and the Community & Technical College @ West Virginia University Institute of Technology will be honored Saturday for their achievements in society and contribution to the schools. Gordon Billheimer, a retired Montgomery attorney, will receive the Distinguished Service Award from the Tech Foundation Inc.
Also being honored as Alumni of the Year are:
- Sam Scalise, a native of Montgomery and developer along coastal South Carolina, CTC@WVU Tech.
- Warren Perrine, Parkersburg, WV; retired from DuPont; College of Business, Humanities and Sciences.
- Larry T. Price, West Point, VA; senior vice president of Smurfit-Stone Container Corp.ıs containerboard mill and forest resources division; Leonard C. Nelson College of Engineering.
Alumni of the year are selected on three criteria:
- They must have achieved recognition and a successful stature in their chosen professions so that they exemplify the value of their academic preparation at WVU Tech and/or the Community and Technical College at WVU Tech.
- They must have strong service commitment as found in a record of selfless acts on behalf of family, friends, neighbors and their local community.
- They must have given back in some way to Tech, such that their actions serve as a role model of loyalty and service for all alumni.
Billheimer has been associated with WVU Tech since its name was changed from New River State College in 1941, the year he enrolled. He is currently a member of the board of directors of Tech Foundation Inc. and the Tech Athletic Scholarship Fund, of which he is a founding member. Billheimer has also served on the Fayette County and West Virginia Boards of Education, including two terms as president of the local group.
Scalise received a civil engineering technology degree from the CTC @ WVU Tech in 1969. He has built a successful real estate and development along the South Carolina coast, with his developments nationally recognized. He also was credited with being a key factor in the regionıs recovery from Hurricane Hugo in 1989.
Perrine received a BS in Industrial Management from WVU Tech in 1964. He retired in 1993 as safety superintendent of DuPontıs 2,000-employee Washington Works in Parkersburg. He was honored as ³Safety Professional of the Year² by the West Virginia Safety Council in 1989 and has served as a safety consultant and instructor.
Price, a 1981 graduate with a BS in Electrical Engineering, is a 24-year veteran of the pulp and paper industry. The four will be honored in a ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 11:45 a.m. in Davis Hall Auditorium on the WVU Tech campus.
The event, which is open to the public, is a highlight of Homecoming Weekend, which will kick off at 11 on Friday, Sept. 28, with the dedication of the Publishing Innovation Center, a national educational and training facility, in downtown Montgomery.
The WVU Tech vs. Campbellsville University Homecoming football game begins at 1:30 p.m. at Martin Field.
