WVU Institute of Technology and the Community & Technical College at WVU Tech Provide Relief Efforts for Hurricane Katrina Victims
Montgomery, WV – WVU Institute of Technology (WVU Tech) and the Community and Technical College at WVU Tech (CTC @ WVU Tech) have begun various relief measures for the victims of Hurricane Katrina ranging from donation fundraising to tuition assistance for displaced college students.
“Hurricane Katrina has been a devastation for all the individuals living along the gulf coast. Our hearts go out to each and everyone affected, and we are determined to help with all of our capabilities,” stated President of WVU Tech Charles Bayless. “Our administration, faculty, staff, and students are doing their part for relief efforts.”
For those students who had paid tuition and fees at one of the schools that is closed due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina, WVU Tech will waive late fees, provide room waivers for the Fall 05 and Spring 06 semesters, and will waive the tuition for the Fall 05. According to Director of Recruitment and Admissions Lisa Beth Graham, many students may not have all their necessary paperwork for admissions at this time. They will be admitted conditionally until the proper paperwork is available. In addition, WVU Tech will allow those out-of-state student (from closed institutions) to pay in-state tuition and fees for the Spring 06 semester. Beginning in the Fall 06, those student’s tuition and fees will once again be based on their residency status.
President Jo Harris from the CTC @ WVU Tech added, “We want to also provide tuition assistance for those students whose institutions have closed due to the hurricane and flooding. We are reopening enrollment and waiving late fees.”
Various groups and student organizations are starting drives and fundraising efforts. Groups that are collecting cash for the American Red Cross include the WVU Tech Nursing Department, Phi Theta Kappa, Phi Kappa Tao Fraternity and The CTC @ WVU Tech Faculty & Staff. The Interfraternity Council is coordinating a walk-a-thon as well as other events. The WVU Tech Democrats, Accounting Leaders of Tomorrow, and Society for Human Resource Management are working together with the Beckley Red Cross to assist with needs such as a clothing drive and possibly a blood drive; Phi Beta Lambda is accepting paper products for the Red Cross; and the Health Services Administration Department is working with the Red Cross at Camp Dawson for donations of clothing, paper goods, personal hygiene products, toys, and infant needs products.
