Work Study

Federal Work Study

Federal Work-Study is awarded as part of a need-based Financial Aid Package based on information received from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The Federal Work-Study Program provides jobs on campus for undergraduate students with financial need allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to each student’s course of study.

Students will earn at least the current federal minimum wage, but the amount could be higher depending on the type of work performed and the skills required. Your total Federal Work-Study award depends on when you apply, your level of need, and the funding level of the school.

Students will be paid by the hour for all hours worked. The student will submit a timesheet twice per month to the Human Resources Office. The school will pay the student directly by check or the student may elect to have the school make payments by direct-deposit to their bank account. Awards are not paid directly to the university for institutional charges such as tuition, fees, and room and board; however, the student may elect to pay these charges with Work-Study funds paid directly to the university by the student.

Work-Study positions could be on campus or off campus. If you work on campus, you will usually work for the university. If you work off campus, your employer will usually be a private nonprofit organization or a public agency, and the work performed must be in the public interest. WVUIT also participates in the America Reads/America Counts program offering tutoring positions for students who have been awarded Federal Work-Study funds. The target of the program is to help children in Pre-K through 6th grade read independently and well. The America Counts program works with children in pre-K through the 8th grade to help improve mathematical and problem-solving skills. The positions are based in the public school system.

Recipients of the College Work Study awards may work a maximum of 20 hours per week but not more than 8 hours in a 24 hour period during full-time enrollment periods or a maximum of 40 hours per week during non-enrollment periods, such as Thanksgiving, and Spring break. The amount you earn cannot exceed your total Federal Work-Study award. When assigning work hours, your employer or financial aid administrator will consider your class schedule and your academic progress.

Institutional Employment Program for Students

The Institutional Work-Study program is a student employment program similar to Federal Work-Study except it is not based on need and any student can qualify. However, wages are paid at 100% by the employing department. Students would need to check with the department about employment.

Job Location and Development Program

The JLDP, established in 1978, is designed to encourage the development of off-campus part-time or full-time employment for all students, regardless of financial need.

Note: Financial Aid recipients should contact the Human Resources Office before accepting off-campus employment. For job listing and applications, visit the Human Resources Office, Room 216, Old Main or call 442-3058.
